Does your child have a Royal Academy of Dance examination in the coming months? Get ready for plies at the dining room table and extra hours at the dance studio. Remember this can be stressful time for your little black swan as she strives to show technique and confidence to her dance instructor and pass the RAD exam even though her stomach is full of butterflies.
Make exam day go smoother by following a few helpful tips: -
Be sure your little performer gets plenty of rest the night before and eats a healthy breakfast.
Make sure your performer understands RAD etiquette - whether on stage or not, your child is being observed by RAD staff beginning the moment he enters the room. Poise and manner are important.
Dress the part. RAD requires that dancers wear regulation examination uniform dancewear. Be sure to buy your regulation-gear in advance - exam day shouldn't be the first day your child puts on her new regulation leotard.
Here are the RAD dress requirements:
Girls perform wearing a short sleeved or sleeveless leotard. Preschoolers and kindergarteners can wear a wrap-over skirt in a color that is the same as the leotard and they can also use a matching ballet wrap or cardigan so long as the color matches the leotard. Older girls, grades one through five, may not accessorize with skirts or wraps; but only a ballet belt matching the leotard. Girls grade six and over must wear a practice skirt and belt. Girls' shoes: Grades one through eight and higher, advanced grades must wear pink 60 Denier ballet tights (seams optional) and pink satin shoes. Younger girls wear pink ankle socks with their pink ballet shoes.
Girls hair must be off the neck in a tight bun if possible.
Approved colors for Preschool are - lilac, pink, and marine blue. Approved colors for grades one through eight are - pink, lilac, marine blue, red, navy or mulberry. If a practice skirt is worn, it must be navy, black, burgundy or lavender. Advanced grades, higher than eight should wear a black or navy camisole style leotard.
Boys perform wearing pale blue or white sleeveless leotards. Young boys can pair the leotard with navy or black shorts and older boys and men can wear navy blue or black stirrup tights. Black leather ballet shoes are worn with either black tights or white socks. Be sure to heap plenty of praise on your little performer - before and after the exam.
