The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) has new regulation examination wear periodically and for examinations you are required to wear it. The RAD is an established institution and as such has strict regulations to the examination uniforms to be worn. The uniform regulations are broken down based on grades and are specific as to allowable colours and fabrics. In Pre Primary and Primary Grades for Girl's the new examination colours are pink, lilac and marine blue. Acceptable fabrics are normally Cotton, Voile, Georgette or Chiffon. Examination candidates can wear short-sleeved leotards or sleeveless leotards in the acceptable colours. In addition pink ankle socks are allowable with pink satin ballet shoes.
During the winter months a matching ballet wrap cardigan in the acceptable colours can be worn before and after the examination. This grade is for 5-6 years minimum age for entry. For girls taking the examination in Grades One and Two the colours are pink, lilac, red, navy, mulberry or marine blue. A short sleeved or sleeveless leotard with a belt can be worn. Pink 60 Denier ballet tights with or without a seam and pink satin shoes are acceptable. This grade is for those aged 7 years minimum and above. The girl's higher grades, can wear a black or navy camisole style leotard with 60 Denier ballet tights. At grade 6 and higher a practice skirt in navy, black, burgundy and / or lavender is required. It is preferred that the skirt is circular; however, can be gathered at the waist as well. At grade 6 the minimum age is 11 years old.
The regulations for the boy's / men's RAD regulation are also governed by acceptable colour and style. The boy and men RAD regulation dancewear colours are navy or black and white or pale blue. Black leather ballet shoes are worn with either black tights or white socks. The boys wear navy or black shorts with a blue or white sleeveless leotard. Older boys and men can wear navy blue stirrup tights with a white sleeveless leotard. The girl's hair in all grades must be neat and tidy and worn in a ballet bun if long enough. If hair is not long enough for a ballet bun, hair must be pulled back off the face and neck in order that the line of the head and neck is not obscured. No Jewellery should be worn, unless required for religious or cultural purposes. Spectacles are acceptable. Make-up for the girls is not required, although light make-up may be worn for the candidates in later teenage years.
